RefWorks (Citation management tool)

Install RefWorks in MS Word

For MS Word 2016 or above, please use RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM). RCM is a plug-in which can be installed from MS Word.

1) Install RefWorks Citation Manager

a) In Open MS Word, click Insert > My Add-ins
b) Under ADMIN MANAGED, select RefWorks Citation Manager and Add
(Note: If you are not using MS Office under HSU's license, please try to search RefWorks Citation Manager under STORE)

Add in 1

2) Sign in RefWorks,

a) click RCM 
b) RefWorks Citation Manager button
c) Sign in with your RefWorks account

3) The reference list will be updated automatically after log in

4) Click Refresh Reference List button to refresh any update

5) Click the options button > Citation style and select the preferred citation style

*** RefWorks planned to end support for Write-N-Cite by the end of 2024 ***

 

For versions earlier than MS Word 2016, please install and use Write-N-Cite (WNC). WNC is a plug-in that can be downloaded from RefWorks' menu.

1) After sign-in on RefWorks, click Tools > Tools

2) Click Install Write-n-Cite

3) When the download is completed, click the installer > Install > ...> Finish 

4) Open MS Word > click RefWorks > Log in with your account.

5) To select the preferred citation style

Adding In-text Citations:

1. Search and select the reference from the RCM sidebar, click Insert Citation

Note: You can select multiple references if more than 1 reference is going to be cited at the same time. (e.g. several works are supporting the same idea)

2. To edit an inline citation, hover over the reference title and click Edit this. You can:

  • Add/Hide page numbers (Override Pages)
  • Include/Hide the author's name
  • Include/Hide the publication date
  • Add text before the reference (Prefix)
  • Add text after the reference (Suffix)

Note: Some options are available depending on the citation style. For example, adding or hiding page numbers works only for styles that require page numbers.

 

Adding Bibliography

1. Click on the options button > Bibliography

Note: Any reference material that has been inserted as in-text citations will be added to the bibliography immediately. To save the loading time and to avoid overloading of the computer hardware, it is recommended to insert the bibliography when the writing is finished. 

Adding In-text Citation

1. Select Insert Citation > Insert New

 2. Search with the search bar / Browse with the folders to locate the reference

Note: You can cite more than 1 source at the same time by clicking + in the Compose Citations area to add additional references 

3. Editing a reference is allowed to fit your writing styles

  • Hide the publication year
  • Hide the author name
  • Add text before the reference (Prefix)
  • Add text after the reference (Suffix)
  • Hide the reference and only have the bibliography entry
  • Hide page numbers (Suppress Pages)
  • Add page numbers (Override Pages)
  • Change the reference order: Use the up or down arrows for styles that use first-cited order. For styles that use alphabetical or another sorting, select Override Default Ordering.

Note: Some options depend on the citation style. For example, adding or hiding page numbers works only for styles that require page numbers.

 

Adding Bibliography

1. Select Bibliography Options > Insert Bibliography
