Research Essentials

Disseminating Your Work

Academic dissemination is the process of sharing research findings with relevant audiences to maximize the impact and utility of the research. Once you have finished your work, other than submitting it to your instructor for grading, you may consider disseminating your work through various channels as listed on this page.

Still, before choosing the right channel to disseminate your work, pay attention to a few key considerations as follows:

  • Ethical Considerations
✓ If you are to disseminate research that involves human subjects, ensure you have obtained proper consent from participants before sharing any data or findings
✓ Be mindful of cultural sensitivity and avoid any potential bias when sharing or presenting your work

  • Policies
✓ Observe publishing policies by the chosen publishers to ensure you have met all listed requirements, for examples:
Elsevier Author Services  I  SpringerNature Author Services  I  Wiley Author Services
✓ Consult with your adviser or observe the institution's policy on publishing of your work (see Code of Ethics, Research@HSUHK)

  • Sustainability
✓ Have a plan for maintaining and updating dissemination materials over time, especially on social networks

Suggestions on Research Dissemination

Getting your research published in academic journals is one of the best ways to share your findings with the world. By submitting a well-crafted paper to an academic journal, you can share your work with a global audience of scholars and practitioners in your subject field.

Do choose a reputable peer-reviewed journal, which will go through a review process where experts in your field check it out and give feedback. This not only boosts your paper's credibility but also helps you improve it before it gets published. Once it’s out there, your work can be cited by other researchers, which means it’s contributing to the ongoing conversation in your field and reaching a wider audience.

Tips: Check out the below short clip by the Deakin Library on what peer review is:

Conferences and seminars are awesome places to share your research and build connections with others in your field. Presenting your findings—whether through a talk or a poster—gives you the chance to get immediate feedback and have meaningful conversations with fellow researchers. Not only can you learn from others, but you might also find potential collaborators or mentors who can help you on your academic journey. Plus, it’s a great way to stay updated on what’s happening in your area of study!

Publishing research on academic social networks, such as ResearchGateAcademia.edu or even LinkedIn, can significantly boost visibility and engagement. These platforms allow you to share your papers, engage in discussions, and connect with others in their field. By creating a profile and actively participating in these networks, you can showcase your work, follow relevant research, and receive feedback from a broader audience. This not only helps in disseminating your research but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among scholars worldwide.
